Benefits of Exercise Health

Exercise is essential for us all and has positive effects on our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies.

Dopamine and Serotonin are chemicals produced in the brain that improve one’s mood and protects against mental health disorders. Serotonin decreases depression, Anxiety and Tension, whilst Dopamine improves one’s mood and long-term memory. It can create highly pleasurable feelings like those felt by runners AKA the “runners high.”  Both chemicals are released when one under takes a certain physical activity or exercise.  Adults may wish to engage in at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, or even better, a combination of both. Strength training using weights or body weight can be practiced around three times a week to create a strong core and physical foundation.  Of course, improving in all these areas will greatly improve one’s life in many ways and may add value to their spiritual practices i.e. Yoga or Tai Chi

Engaging in regular exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. It decreases one’s risk of cardiovascular disease plus countless others including; stroke, high blood pressure, inflammation, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, depression, anxiety, cancer, arthritis, cognitive dysfunctions and helps lower the risk of overall premature death.

Controls weight

Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn.

Boosts energy

Regular physical exercises will improve one’s muscle strength and endurance.

Improves mood

Physical exercise stimulates various brain chemicals to leave you feeling happier, relaxed and less anxious. A side effect of regular exercise is an improvement in one’s body which may boost your confidence and improve self-esteem.

Promotes better sleep

Physical activity can help one fall asleep faster and deepen the sleep leaving one energized and ready for each new day.

Improves mental strength

Regular, dedicated exercise may improve one’s mental strength by pushing past mental barriers and encouraging perseverance which may affect many different areas of one’s life.

Exercise can be used to support focusing on the present moment and amplifying gratitude and appreciation

Below are some tips to incorporate physical exercise into one’s mental and spiritual practice

One may listen to inspirational music or the sound of nature around them.

One can increase mindfulness by paying attention to how their body feels, accepting the moment or paying attention to the surroundings.

Use exercise to send positive energy and prayers and reflect on the people and things you feel grateful for in that moment.

Create personal Mantras or breathing patterns. E.g. Breathe in love and exhale light. Or repeat a phrase like “I am light”, “I am love”, “I am grounded”, “I am strong”, “I am connected”, “ I feel alive”.

Physical exercise does not have to be performed in a gym or in any specific environment. Using ones own body weight is an inexpensive and easy way to gain strength, endurance and flexibility without leaving your home or joining up to a gym. The benefits of body weight exercises are incredible.
